All right, I know I'm not the only one feeling this, but I believe we should bring back the RP to the forum. I know we've decided against bringing it back, but its been a part of Vortex since, well fuck, since Aceboard and maybe even before that. It's attracted a solid amount of attention to Vortex in the past and, as have developed us not only as spriters but also as creative thinkers/writers/whatever. On top of that, it's just plain fun.

Does anyone else think the RP should start up again? Be sure to share your thoughts.

Yes. Right now, Vortex could use the activity. We're too..slow at the moment. Barely posting sprites. This could help us, you know creating characters and having events could help us get back into spriting and making bad-ass characters.

What vortex needs right now is some inspiration.

All I'm gonna say is we've been at our peaks of activity when:

1) We're moving to a new board and everything is all shiny.

2) We're preparing for a new RPG and everyone is excited.



*Note that I said "preparing for a new RPG," as it tends to happen with RPGs, the actual number of daily players is less than that of the members who are excited about an RPG.

Now I'm not saying no, I just want to bring to attention the fact that all recent RPG's die in almost 2 weeks. TardyClock tried to make one and that never took off the ground. It's just laying dormant on the board that only the admins can see.

If you guys are serious about this, please elect leaders and all the things you want(board names etc), and if the rest of vortex agrees, it shall be made.

Personally, I would rather see Yahn, Tardy, Ryu, and/or Blues man the helm. They made some good RPs [they didn't last long, oh well], but they were good nonetheless. If anyone else wants to see me up to this, then I've no problems with it.

I should totally be the leader of the new RPG. I already have a character creation system planned out! Alright, so to figure out your Strength, take the month of your birthday divided by five. Round down any fractions. Times that number by the number of times you can hop on one foot while singing the National Anthem. Divide this by the square root of pi, then add how many marshmallows you fit into your mouth. Sacrifice your first male born son to the Devil, and then subtract 666 from the number. There, you're already half down in figuring out your character's Strength!

I'd say either do something like Sotd3, or like Void Conflict

Those I could tell were system that had the most potential. The original DBRumble system's good, as well. If we do the SotD1 system, the more literary-based RPers will overrule. It's just how it is.

I just want some reason to actually, yaknow, type a decent amount. If we have the same power, or if a noob can catch up to you within a week of joining, when you've been on for like a month, it just isn't right. If you want to make it so that there's not as much spamming. Limit the training. Or just make no training posts, and only play on a plot line.

Before we worry about systems, define a setting and fit the system for the type of RPG we'll have.


For example, I feel we should do a DBZ-multiverse style RPG. Instead of hammering individual storylines to fit one canon, we have some kind of empty, neutral reality that various beings have been pulled into from alternating timelines and realities. It solves the Saiyan and Custom Race problems by acknowledging that they exist in some alternate reality that isn't the DBZ canon.

Perhaps a large tournament across several worlds? Not a rule-based tournament, but more open-world PvP combat where players are free to form alliances/teams/whatthehellever or play lone-wolf style in order to win whatever the desired goal may be.

I like the idea of this, and it makes things more or less interesting. If this would be the case, then Iwould definately suggest the Void Conflict-esque system, since it was based around tournaments, so to speak. Unless you have something else in mind, then by all means share it with us.

Location wise, I would say it should keep itself on earth.

I like the idea of a clean slate for a cannon, but by a DBZ-multiverse and a large tournament, do you mean like some sort of combination of Vortex Chronicles and Void Conflict respectively? If yes, I vote the name be VC Squared.

Goddamnit! Why are all my ideas being said out first. Screw timezones! Anyway, I was gonna suggest the alternate universe thing too. If it is a tournament thing, that would be cool. Or maybe a normal RPG where everyone trains and do normal shit, but once a month or twice a month there will be a tournament and whoever ones can sign up for it. Winner gets rewards and things.

I liked the word to PL system. It's simple and easy to understand. For characters that have a high PL, the word to PL could be reduced to x0.5 so that it's harder for them to train. That makes it so it's not outrageously unbalanced.

I think I'm just going to skip ahead to where this argument will lead: the weaker characters would forever bitch about being weak and feeling left out, and the stronger character would forever bitch about how they are being penalized just for being active RPers. Seriously, a word to PL system is just not the greatest idea.

Is it too much to hope for something a wee more involved? Certainly not as in-depth as the system I put forth (and mocked in my post earlier), but not as simple as "I TYPE WORDS I GET THE POWERS." If the RPG was held here on Vortex, I'd love to see the dice rolls option used somehow.

Ryu rolls for a critical hit!

Yeah, I no longer wish for a RP that involves around the system like SotD1. And despite how I can adapt to a complex RP style, I'm afraid very few others are able to, as well. I say we just see what's up in mind, and if it looks good enough to work with, then work with it.

I'm thinking something like this:
**** ALL NUMBERS ARE ONLY FOR EXPLANATION. NOTHING IS CALCULATED YET *****

3 major stats: Body, Mind, and Soul.
Body deals with physical strength and damage per hit.
Mind deals with reactions, weapons, and anything physical that isn't being as big as a moose.
Soul deals with ki/magic/etc.
Your Power Level is the average of your 3 stats.
(Think the 3 stats in Fable).


All RP threads yield a certain amount of XP that scales with your character's PL. XP is spend on your 3 stats, with an proportionally increasing cost as your stat grows higer.
(I.E. it would take 1 XP to increase your Strength from 1 to 2, but 10 XP to increase your Strength from 50-51).

Training would consist of posting a training thread of battling against an opponent appropriate to your level in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber (or whatever).
Opponents would be bracketed based on character's PL, and based on dice rolls to decide who you face.
*1-10 would be weaker opponents, like Saibamen.
*11-20 would be your Nappas, Raditz, etc.
*And so on...

Specific opponents would yield bonus XP for body, mind, or soul.
Specific training regimens, based on PL as a prerequisite, would reward XP for each of your 3 stats depending on the type of training.









This is still a very rough idea, but as RPs would give a baseline amount of XP whether they are short or long, it would take care of the time constraints of various players. Obviously ANY type of RPG will reward those who play more. If you don't like that, then RPGs aren't for you.

We might have? It might have even been one of my ideas. Honestly I don't remember and am too lazy to look.

One thing we haven't tried is a gear-based RPG. How gear would be handled without a game engine is something of an issue, but I think it could be handed with NPC opponents having individual loot-tables of probably 5-10 items and then a dice-roll for the corresponding loot to drop. It could add a sense of single-player mode rather than "GODDAMN IT BEN GET YOUR AUSTRALIAN ASS ONLINE SO I CAN PLAY!!!!" happening all the time.

That's definitely something that needs to be promoted; self-sustaining...ism. I soon found out that my RPG would require me constantly to keep everything going, and I had little to no player interaction. PC to PC interaction should be encouraged, or something that can distract players between postings.

And I don't know if anyone else was hoping for this, but what would anyone say to a more gritty, down to earth RPG? Your character could still fly and shoot lazor beamz and stuff, but perhaps being much less overpowered would encourage topics where fists actually aren't constantly thrown.

I'd much prefer it to be DBZ. An interest in DBZ is the one thing that all members here have in common, and (most) customs will be able to fit in perfectly.

If remember my system at all and were interested in it, but just couldn't be assed to go through the process of making a character, WELL HAVE NO FEAR. This grand little download MAKES CHARACTERS FOR YOU. All you have to know is what you want for your character, and it does all calculations and shit for you. It even tells you if you are in violation of any rules, and how to correct them. Simple, right? If it's not, I don't know what is.

If you download Hero Lab, you'll then want to import the files from Mutants and Masterminds (3rd). It should have 3e Beta written across it. If there's enough interest, maybe it could be our system (maybe including some actual dice rolls and tabletop RPG elements). The setting wouldn't have to be "superhero," seeing as a lot of the powers in Void Conflict were not things present in DBZ, and could be translated into the Mutants and Masterminds system.

I'll have to examine your system more closely, but as far as any of my ideas, don't worry about cockblocking them. I'm not committed to any of them. Just brainstorming.

Anyway what if we use the dice again. I liked that system.
Base it on something like D&D or warhammer.
Where you have set attributes + Armour that makes you better or worse.

And you roll to hit depending on your strength? Or something crazy like that?
